Riverton faces tough road test

After an early season bye week, the Riverton Wolverines football team will be back on the gridiron this Friday at Green River.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on KTAK radio with Erick Pauley calling the play-by-play.

Riverton will try to rebound from a mistake-plagued season-opening 21-8 loss to Evanston, while Green River will work to keep its positive momentum going after a successful week zero scrimmage against Mountain View and a 42-6 shellacking of Lander last Friday.

"We need to get better and eliminate mental mistakes and I think we have looked better this week," said Wolverines head coach Pat Patterson. "We've got a better look from our scout team and that helps us prepare better."

Patterson said Green River is a talented team with returning skill players and quick lineman.

In fact, the Wolves are led by returning veteran all-conference senior quarterback Chance Hofer and all-state receiver and strong safety Cole White.

"They are not as big as last year and some of the things they do are better than last year," said Patterson. "They are not as smash-mouth, but this year they will try and finesse you."

Most of all, the veteran coach hopes his team improves its mental focus.

Against Evanston, the Wolverines were penalized 12 times for 70 yards and had seven drive-killing illegal procedures penalties.

"Green River will alter its snap count," said Patterson. "We can't jump offsides, either."

While on offense, the Wolverines will continue to try and isolate open receivers and improve their positive rushing attack.

"I don't feel like we have a guy and say we have got to get him the ball," said Patterson. "I think we have four, five or six kids out there that can move the football for us."

After Friday's road game, the Wolverines will be back at home for their final non-conference game, a Sept. 15 homecoming challenge against top-ranked Class 2-A Glenrock.
