Big Red cross country runs in RawlinsSep 6, 2017 By Scott Akanewich, Sports Editor
At Riverton's opening cross country event of the new season at the Beartrap Invitational in Casper, freshman Brady Stingley stole the show as the highest-placed Wolverine in the boys' varsity race.
Apparently, that result didn't sit very well with sophomore Tarryn Whiteplume.
The Big Red second-year man rebounded from a 23rd-place effort in the season-opener to post a seventh-place finish at the Rawlins Invitational on Friday in a time of 19:05.79.
Stingley once again showed strong with a 13th in 19:26.54, making it a pair of top-15 finishes for the rookie runner in as many races, as he embarks on his high-school career.
Senior and team captain Dino Baldes was next for Riverton in 15th place with a 19:30.37.
Other Wolverines boys finishers included Drew Shroyer (26th, 21:07.21) and Steven Makin (28th, 21:14.00).
Laramie's Albert Steiner made it two consecutive victories to open the season, winning in a time of 16:52.42.
On the girls' side of the competition, Rawlins' Sydney Thorvaldson also won her second straight event to begin the new campaign, crossing the line in 18:35.83 on her home course, blitzing the field by over two minutes in the process.
Trysta Stingley was the fastest Lady Wolverine, posting an eighth-place showing in 22:58.24.
Sophomore Sydney Chatfield was 17th with a 24:00.78.
Other finishers were Madilynn Smith (25th, 27:28.61) and Taliana Shaw (26th, 27:33.80).
Riverton will next face Lander in a dual at Central Wyoming College's Sinks Canyon Center on Thursday, followed by a race in Sheridan on Saturday.
