POWELL (AP) -- A Wyoming man killed his wife after the couple went to a hospital in search of help for her apparent mental health problems, authorities said.

David Williamson, 64, acknowledged he shot Shirley Williamson, 65, early Saturday, saying she had tried to shoot him with an unloaded gun and told him to kill her, sheriff's investigator Phil Johnson wrote of David Williamson's account.

He called 911 and investigators arrived to find him on his front porch and his wife dead of a gunshot wound to her head in a bedroom, according to the Park County Sheriff's Office.

A judge set bond Monday at $700,000 at a hearing where prosecutor Leda Pojman said the shooting was a "very devastating and heartbreaking situation" for everybody involved.

Charged with second-degree murder, Williamson could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. He remained jailed Tuesday and didn't have an attorney.

David Williamson said his wife's mental state had been deteriorating and she had been hearing voices.
