Wolverines host v-ball tourneyAug 24, 2017 By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer
Eleven teams will welcome in the 2017 high school volleyball season in Riverton at the McDonald's Invitational volleyball tournament this Friday and Saturday at Wolverine Gym and Riverton Middle School.
Teams from Jackson, Pinedale, Powell, Worland, Lander, Sho-shoni, Thermopolis, Big Piney, Kemmerer and Wind River will join the Riverton Lady Wolverines in pool play on Friday and bracket play on Saturday.
"We're ready. The girls are ready for a game. We are to that point," said Riverton head coach Trista Day. "As far as lineups go, we'll see where we're at. I may throw a little shocker in that will surprise people."
Riverton returns a squad with experience after qualifying for the state tournament last year and ultimately placing third.
Seniors Taylenn Thompson, Skyler Smith, Maycee Manzanares and Ally Lanham will provide the leadership on the floor and all saw varsity action last year.
Junior Ella Hauck and sophomores Naya Shime and Hannah Reinig bring back power and experience as well.
Perhaps the biggest question coming into the season will be at setter for the Lady Wolverines.
"At the moment, Hannah Reinig has stepped into that setter position. She is very inexperienced (at setter). Carlee Flanagan is another setter we'll look at and possibly run a 6-2," said Day. "We also have been throwing Ella Hauck into the setter position."
Riverton will open the tournament against Shoshoni at 9 a.m. on Friday and will also challenge Jackson, Thermopolis and Powell during pool play.
All of Riverton's varsity games are in Wolverine Gym.
Manzanares and sophomore Mackenzie Becker are battling for time at libero -- the defensive specialist position -- according to Day.
"I think the Class 3-A teams that are here will be a good look for us and there are some smaller schools and we can look past them," Day said. "This weekend really, truly for me is to see how we mesh as a team."
There is no cost to attend the McDonald's tournament.
