RHS athletes fare well in Wyoming Track Classic event
By Bruce Tippets
Sports Editor
Riverton High School track and field athletes Jasmine Shells, Janelle Rottweiler and Cory Smith held their own against the best in the state Monday during the Wyoming Track Classic in Casper.
With their performances, those three turned into title contenders for the state meet set for next month in Casper. The Wyoming Track Classic was made up of the best times and distances in all classifications.
Monday’s meet originally was set for Friday but was postponed because of inclement weather.
“Most of them ran what they were capable of running,” RHS coach Tawn Gopp said. “Janelle had a personal best by about 10 feet in the discus.”
The Wolverines will conclude the regular season Saturday at the Shane Brock Invitational in Lander.
“It’s a real short season,” Gopp said. “It goes by quick, especially when you are battling the weather the whole season. We are a little concerned about the weather for Saturday.
“We are hoping that we don’t get dumped on and the meet is canceled. We really need to get another meet in before regionals.”
Girls
Rottweiler, a junior, came into the meet ranked No. 2 in the state in the shot put and finished the event third with a throw of 39-7.25. Her best throw of the season is 39-10. Casper Natrona’s Baillie Gibson won with a toss of 40-10.50, and Kelsey Scott from Douglas was second at 39-7.25.
“She is a pretty strong competitor,” Gopp said about Gibson. “She had personal bests in the shot and the discus.”
In the discus, Rottweiler finished fifth at 117-06 to set a personal best. Her previous high was 107-9.
“Janelle had a good day in the discus ring, but she has more in her in the shot,” Gopp said.
Gibson made it a clean sweep in the weight events, winning the discus at 140-0. Teammate Kaylee Beddes finished second at 135-10 and Elisha Etchemendy from Douglas was third at 135-0.
Shells, a freshman, sprinted to a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.87. Shanae Hedlund from Kelly Walsh came in first at 12.53, and Torrington’s Lindsey Simmons was second at 12.71.
“It was a pretty competitive field in the 100-meter,” Gopp said.
Hedlund finished second in the 200-meter (25.68) and was first in the 400 (58.46). Boys
Smith, a senior, crossed the finish line sixth Monday in the 400-meter run a with a time of 52.44. Smith’s previous top time was 52.48.
“Cory’s strategy was all-out for the race to compete with those guys, and he kind of ran out of steam in the last 50 yards,” Gopp said. “Cory was running a little tight, and we need to loosen him up. He will be there by state. We haven’t started to taper with him and he has more in him.”
Evanston’s Michael Bryant came in first in the race at 50.33, and Star Valley’s Kevin Brough was second in 50.61.
In the 800-meter run, Sundance’s Cody Emrick turned things on and won the title with a time of 1:55.81. Cody’s Ethan Slight was second at 1:56.27 and David Guerney from Torrington finished third (2:02.18).
Earlier this month, Emrick signed a national letter of intent to play men’s basketball for Central Wyoming College.
Laramie’s Stephen Michel dominated the Wyoming Track Classic winning the 100-meter (10.75), 200-meter (21.74), long jump (22-8) and the triple jump (46-1.50). |

Lander track and field teams sweep titles at Bobcat meet
By Randy Tucker
Sports Writer
THERMOPOLIS — A peaking Lander Valley High School track and field team swept both the boys and girls divisions at the Bobcat Invitational Monday in Thermopolis. Last week’s snowstorm led to the postponement of the meet until Monday, and most teams scheduled from last week came to compete.
The notable exception was Wind River’s team that was not allowed to compete because of administrative decision.
The Lander girls ran to first behind a sweep of all three relays and a pair of first-place finishes by freshman sprinter Maggie Budd. Budd won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes and picked up another gold medal anchoring the Tiger 4x100-meter relay.
Teammate Domieka Meredith had a solid day on the oval with wins in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and legs on both the championship 4x400- and 4x800-meter relay teams.
Larkin Guenther added a win in the 400-meter dash and anchored the 4x400 meter relay.
Points were hard to come by for Wyoming Indian and Dubois, but Kelli White Eagle paced the Chiefs with a third in the 1,600-meter run and runner-up finish in the 3,200.
Lindsay Copeland paced the Rams with a third in the 200, a fourth in the 100, a third in the 300-meter hurdles and a fifth in the 100-meter hurdles.
Riverton’s highest finish came with Keesa Rottweiler’s runner-up showing in the 800-meter run.
For the boys, Lander won four individual events and one relay but amassed a plethora of second-, third- and fourth-place finishes to take a 12-point win over second-place Pinedale.
Kyle NoisyHawk won the 400 in Fremont County’s fastest time yet this season in 52.28. Mitch Brauneis won the 1,600-meter run, then added a second in the 800 and a third in the 3,200 meter runs.
Josh Jones won the 110-meter high hurdles with Sean Ryder taking fifth. The Tigers best event came in the long hurdle race where Eric Ragan finished second in 40.88, Ryder third in 41.38 and Jones fifth in 42.70.
Garrett Irene won the high jump with a county best 6-0.
Lander’s 4x400-meter relay team took home the gold as well.
Wyoming Indian sophomore Caleb Her Many Horses took top honors in the 3,200-meter run in 10:12 then ran a personal best in the 800 to win the event in 2:02.69. Slade Spoonhunter tallied a fifth in the 3,200, a sixth in the 1,600 and a seventh in the 800-meter run in his first meet of the season. Keller Duran added a seventh in the 1,600.
Fremont County teams will either split venues or have athletes compete in different events at two meets this weekend. On Friday, Thermopolis hosts its annual preregional meet, while Lander hosts the Shane Brock Memorial on Saturday.
